Paraffin: the production killer
Crude oil leaves the formation warm, carrying paraffin wax dissolved in solution. As it climbs the tubing, temperature and pressure drop — and the wax precipitates out, plating onto tubing walls, rods, and flowlines in white-to-yellow layers. Every layer shrinks the flow path, raises pumping loads, and cuts production. Left alone, it chokes the well off entirely.
It’s rarely just wax
Deposits are almost never one thing. ASTM lists over 120 materials found in water-formed oilfield deposits — mineral scales like calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate, iron sulfide from bacteria-soured systems, formation solids, and corrosion byproducts. Paraffin acts like a binder that helps these other deposits accumulate, which is why buildup accelerates once it starts.
What heat actually does
Paraffin is temperature-driven: it fell out of solution because the oil cooled, so restoring heat reverses the process. A hot oil unit circulates heated oil through the wellbore or flowline, re-melting the wax back into solution and carrying it out with the flow — restoring the full pipe diameter without cutting, milling, or pulling tubing.
Why on a schedule
Wax deposition never stops — it restarts the moment treated oil cools back down. That’s why the operators with the best lifting costs don’t wait for a plugged well; they run scheduled treatments that keep buildup from ever reaching the point where production suffers. Catching it early is dramatically cheaper than a workover.
